New coordinator of mental performance

Clint Norseth's addition to Athletics expands the mental health and performance services for student-athletes to three full-time staff members.

University of Utah student-athletes will receive expanded access to resources in the areas of mental performance and mental health with the addition of Dr. Clint Norseth as coordinator of mental performance. Norseth, who began his new position on Aug. 1, joined Utah Athletics after spending the past year at BYU and one year prior to that at Utah State, and in both roles played a strong role in serving both the mental health and performance needs of student-athletes.

“Both mental health and performance are extremely important components of our program’s success, and having the ability to add another full-time professional with expertise in both of these areas has allowed us to enhance our support of our student-athletes and coaches,” said Nona Richardson, executive senior associate athletics director and senior woman administrator. “Clint’s experience as a clinical psychologist will provide another important layer of services for our student-athletes. We will now have three full-time performance and wellness coaches, as well as two interns.”

In his role at BYU Norseth taught courses in performance psychology and contemporary issues for student-athletes, and provided workshops, team presentations and psychological consultation for student-athletes and athletic department staff.

Norseth has extensive experience providing mental health counseling to student-athletes, and in helping student-athletes achieve life, academic and performance goals. He has published and presented significant research on topics around wellness and optimal performance for collegiate student-athletes. As a staff psychologist at Utah State’s Counseling and Psychological Services department he served as the liaison to USU’s athletic department to provide mental health services to student-athletes, and previously completed a pre-doctoral internship at BYU’s Counseling and Psychological Services with a training rotation in athletics.

“We are excited to add Dr. Norseth to our team as coordinator of mental performance, as well as an assistant psychologist,” said Dr. Jonathan Ravarino, director of psychology and wellness for Utah Athletics. “His expertise in both mental performance and mental health allows us to provide additional assistance to our student-athletes.”

Norseth completed his doctorate in clinical psychology from Loma Linda University in 2017, from which he also received his master’s in psychology in 2013. He earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Weber State in 2010.
