Federico Ardila, a Professor of Mathematics at San Francisco State University and the Universidad de Los Andes, will visit the University of Utah January 24-25 to speak about mathematics, music and diversity in STEM.
Ardila is a Professor of Mathematics at San Francisco State University and the Universidad de Los Andes. He is an ICM Invited Speaker, a Fellow of the AMS, an NSF CAREER Awardee in the US, and a recipient of the Premio Nacional de Ciencias and Premio Nacional de Matemáticas in Colombia. His research is in combinatorics and its connections to geometry, algebra, topology, and applications.
Ardila is constantly working towards fostering an increasingly diverse, equitable, and welcoming community of mathematicians that serves the needs of all communities. He is also a student of the centuries-old musical dialogue between Africa and the Americas.
On Tuesday, January 24th, in an interactive collaborative event with the U School of Music, Ardila will demonstrate the music of the Colombian Pacific coast. The event is from 10:45 a.m.—12:05 p.m. in DGH 270.
That evening, Ardila will present a Mathematics department colloquium from 4-5 p.m. in JWB 335.
On Wednesday, January 25, Ardila will present his lecture in the Represent: STEM Voices lecture series from 6-7 p.m. in ASB 220. Refreshments will be served 30 minutes prior outside the auditorium.
“I truly feel that Dr. Ardila is one of the most influential mathematicians of our time for both his mathematical research contributions and his endless work towards creating a more inclusive math community,” said Priyam Patel, assistant professor of mathematics at the U. “He has been a great friend, role model and mentor to me for many years, and I am excited for members of the University of Utah community to learn more about him.”
