Supercross FIM World Championship coming to Utah

For the first time in 23 years, Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, in partnership with the Utah Sports Commission, has announced they will be moving the iconic racing circuit season finale event from Las Vegas to Utah

For the first time in 23 years, Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, in partnership with the Utah Sports Commission, has announced they will be moving the iconic racing circuit season finale event from Las Vegas to Utah, the “State of Sport,” to host the Supercross Championship World Finale at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City on Saturday, May 2, 2020, becoming one of the largest sporting events held in the Beehive State since the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.

Monster Energy Supercross features the world’s most elite athletes chasing their dreams onto U.S. soil inside America’s most well-known stadiums. Three first-time champions, Cooper Webb (450SX Class), Dylan Ferrandis (Western Regional 250SX Class) and Chase Sexton (Eastern Regional 250SX Class) will be eager to defend their titles.

Last season fans witnessed the closest finish in the sports 46-year history between Team Honda HRC’s Ken Roczen and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Cooper Webb. Anything can happen once the gate drops and 2020 promises to be an exceptional season as the deep field of Jason Anderson, Marvin Musquin, Eli Tomac, Chad Reed, Justin Barcia, Justin Brayton and incoming premiere class rookie, Adam Cianciarulo continue to make their mark on the sport’s history.

In addition to the World Finale bringing together the top riders in the world to close out the 17-race series throughout the United States, Salt Lake City will also play host to the competitive East/West Showdown race which was the only time throughout the season where both the Eastern Regional 250SX Class and Western Regional 250SX Class athletes race together in what was originally combined non-points paying events. This changed in 2016 when the series changed the format to points-paying races as the only Main Event in the 250SX Class.  Now the 2020 season will mark the first time in the sport’s history that the East/West Showdown races will take place in two new cities (Denver and Salt Lake City), in-an-effort to expose the younger 250SX Class athletes to new audiences.

“Our goal is the continued growth of the sport and rotating markets every couple of years, expanding Supercross Futures events and moving the finale to a new location helps keep the series fresh and exciting for the fans, as well as for the race teams and athletes,” said Todd Jendro, Vice President of Operations – Motorsports, Feld Entertainment. “Utah has become synonymous with elite, world-class sporting events and we thought hosting the finale in Salt Lake City would be a fitting choice.”

“Utah has a long history of hosting Supercross events and other major international sporting events, including the Olympic Winter Games,” said Utah Sports Commission President and CEO Jeff Robbins. “The season finale will be one of the biggest sporting events ever held in Utah, driving tremendous economic impact and media value to our great state. We are excited to welcome back the top riders in the world and their terrific fans to Utah.”

While athletes begin to qualify inside the stadium, Supercross FanFest will kick-off outside the stadium in the paddock where the expansive 14-acre footprint will feature experiential activities for all ages – athlete autograph signings, enhanced Monster Energy demos and musical acts, lounging areas, charging stations, Kawasaki’s Z World (select markets), Monster Energy Supercross, the Official Video Game 3 Experience, Supercross Virtual Reality Experience, photo opportunity setups, food and beverages, plus authentic Supercross and racer merchandise. Fans can experience all of this while also enjoying in-and-out access to the stadium and track to watch practice and qualifying rounds.

Salt Lake will host the largest-ever FanFest footprint at Rice-Eccles Stadium and will become the epicenter of an outdoor-themed, festival-like atmosphere befitting for a World Championship Finale and a World Class, Utah-styled “State of Sport” caliber event.  Street closures are planned for around the stadium to accommodate the larger crowds. Beer gardens, lounging areas and experiential activities will be sprinkled throughout FanFest to accommodate fans and interests of all ages.

One of the FanFest activations featured to date will be the Toyota BMX Triple Challenge, a points-paying competition where athletes will contest on custom-designed BMX dirt tracks at each stop of the tour. Each event will feature the Toyota Best Trick competition where a $75,000 purse is up for grabs. Anticipated athletes expected to compete in the Toyota BMX Triple Challenge hail from global destinations such as Australia, Brazil and Spain and routinely compete in the world’s largest BMX competitions. The Olympic city of Salt Lake City will be a fitting backdrop for the final stop of the Toyota BMX Triple Challenge as most of the athletes competing will also be looking to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Continuing to establish itself as the world’s premier developmental platform for the next generation of amateur riders, Supercross Futures, an AMA Amateur National Championship, has been expanded to ten select markets during the 2020 season including the final round in Salt Lake City on Sunday, May 3.  The series provides even greater access to the sport’s largest stage giving up-and-coming talent a chance to compete in the same stadium and on the same dirt as the elite athletes of Monster Energy Supercross while honing their skills in advance of their professional careers.  The ground-breaking SX Futures concept will foster approximately 6,100 athletes across 26 classes on their “Road To Supercross” – beginning with 4-year-olds in the 51 Limited class through the elite 250SX Futures class, providing athletes the opportunity to earn their 250SX Class Supercross license. Athlete registration opens on October 28 at supercrossfutures.com.
