University of Utah announces transition of chief financial officer role

The University of Utah today announced a leadership transition in its financial administration, recognizing the contributions of Chief Financial Officer Anthony “Tony” Wagner, who will step down from the role at the end of June 2026.

Wagner, who joined the university during a period of significant growth and strategic investment, has played an important role in strengthening the institution’s financial planning and operations. During his tenure, he helped advance long-range financial strategies, supported responsible capital investment and partnered closely with university leadership to align financial resources with institutional priorities.

“Tony has been a thoughtful and steady leader for the university,” said President Taylor Randall. “His commitment to sound financial stewardship and his collaborative approach have helped position the U for continued success. We are grateful for his contributions and wish him the very best.”

To ensure continuity during this transition, the university has appointed Gary L. McArthur as deputy enterprise chief financial officer, effective April 15, 2026. He will take on the role of enterprise chief financial officer on July 1, 2026.

McArthur brings more than 30 years of global executive experience across engineering and construction, aerospace and defense, technology, telecommunications and consumer products. He has served 14 years as a chief financial officer, including 11 years with Fortune 500 companies, and is widely recognized for leading business transformations, driving strategic growth and building high-performing teams.

Most recently, McArthur served as interim chief executive officer of Vista Outdoor and has held senior financial leadership roles at CH2M Hill and Harris Corporation (now L3Harris), where he helped deliver strong financial and operational performance.

A University of Utah alum, McArthur holds an MBA from Harvard University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah. He has maintained strong ties to the institution, including service on the David Eccles School of Business Advisory Board.
