Humanities professor wins environmental award

The College of Humanities at the University of Utah is excited to announce that Dr. Nick Estes—a noted historian, journalist, and community organizer, will receive the Utah Award in Environmental Humanities on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2024. Estes will receive the award at 7:30 p.m. at the University’s Alumni House. After conferring the award, members of the Environmental Humanities Program will engage in a conversation with Estes about the relationships between his work and environmental humanities. The event is free and open to the public.

The Utah Award in the Environmental Humanities celebrates environmental leadership and expression. The award was created to honor those who solve the planet’s environmental problems using humanities tools like creative expression, popular art forms, scholarly research or advocacy. Past recipients of the award include Amitav Ghosh, Rebecca Solnit, Jonathan Franzen, Aniya Butler and Greg Sarris.

“From poets to novelists to essayists to activists, the Utah Award in the Environmental Humanities provides an opportunity for the U’s Environmental Humanities program to recognize key leaders and thinkers that model how humanities inquiry can make a difference in addressing the environmental crises and injustices that face society,” says Dr. Danielle Endres, professor of communication and director of the Environmental Humanities Program. “I am thrilled to be able to present the Utah Award in the Environmental Humanities to Dr. Estes. He is not only an excellent scholar of Indigenous histories and environmental justice, but he is also an accomplished community-engaged public intellectual. Our students frequently highlight how much they appreciate and admire Dr. Estes’ work, particularly his book ‘Our History is the Future.’ Celebrating Dr. Estes with this award exemplifies the program’s three pillars: amplifying Indigenous knowledge, environmental justice and community engagement.”
