The Utah System of Higher Education (USHE) has released new data showing record-breaking enrollment and degree completion at the University of Utah. This fall, the U welcomed the largest incoming class in its 175-year history—6,513 first-year students and 1,497 new transfer students—contributing to an all-time high total enrollment of 38,261 students.
Enrollment has grown steadily for six consecutive years—up nearly 31% since 2020 and almost 4% over last year—reflecting strong demand for the university’s academic programs and student experience. The U continues to draw students from across all 29 Utah counties and all 50 U.S. states. The most popular major remains business.
“Enrollment growth only matters when it leads to student success,” said Paul Kohn, senior vice provost for strategic enrollment and student success. “We’re investing in every stage of the student journey—from access and affordability to academic support and career readiness—to help students reach graduation in a timely and meaningful way.”
In addition to record enrollment, the university awarded its largest number of degrees ever in the 2024–25 academic year—8% more undergraduate degrees than the prior year. Nearly half (44%) of all degrees were in STEM disciplines, and more than 80% were in high-demand fields identified by the Utah Department of Workforce Services.
“These milestones remind us what’s possible when we put students at the center of everything we do,” said President Taylor Randall. “The U is growing not just in size but in impact—advancing knowledge, opportunity and innovation that strengthen Utah and shape a better future everywhere.”
