The University of Utah’s Department of Public Safety are committed to increasing awareness of crime on campus. To aid in that effort, students, faculty, staff and other U community members have access to the LexisNexis Community Crime Map, an online tool that supports campus safety.
The Community Crime Map is an interactive, online system that provides access to reported police activity across main campus. Users can view information and basic crime analytics, which are updated multiple times each day to provide the most current data.
“It’s good information for us internally. We get the locations, so we can see where the hotspots are,” explained Capt. Jason Hinojosa, University of Utah Police, Department of Public Safety. “We can see the day of the week and time of the day where we have most of our occurrences on campus.”
“So it’s not only a tool for the community to be able to more easily digest the information in terms of crime reporting, but it’s also an internal tool to help us better understand where we need to direct our resources,” he said.
Users can search by address or location, filter incidents by date, type of offense, create geographic areas of interest, view basic data and sign up for notifications.
“It’s a way to visualize crime and statistics about crime,” said Nicole Mitchell, senior crime and intelligence analyst for the U’s Department of Public Safety. “We are always trying to be very transparent with the public so they can make determinations about campus safety.”
“We try to give the community multiple ways, multiple resources to find out what’s happening on campus from a public safety standpoint,” she added.
Each reported incident is placed into basic categories required by the Community Crime Map system. The gathered data is anonymized to protect individual privacy.
Mitchell noted the Community Crime Map is a resource to heighten public awareness and community safety. The information shown on the map is not real-time and is subject to change as cases move forward. She also stated that the information collected is not intended to be used to determine trends in criminal activity or general campus public safety.
By making this information available, the Department of Public Safety aims to support informed decision-making and strengthen trust between our department and the campus community, she said.
Users can sign up to receive alerts when new incidents are posted in their areas of interest.
