Student Affairs offers support with scholarships and financial wellness

Finances are a significant hurdle for many college students and in today’s economic climate managing money has become even more challenging. For many young adults stepping into independence and navigating life outside the comforts of home, financial decisions can feel overwhelming. That’s why Student Affairs provides resources to help students navigate and access support for their financial needs.

Opened in Fall 2024, the Center for Student Access and Resources, CSAR, supports over 20 scholarship opportunities that are currently open on the University’s scholarship portal, Academic Works. Paired with individualized advising, these scholarship opportunities alleviate financial burdens and ensure students have a resource navigator to guide them through the complexities of college life.

For students unsure where to begin their scholarship search, CSAR is a great starting point. Throughout the academic year, the center hosts workshops designed to help students craft compelling scholarship applications and personal statements, giving them the tools and confidence to seek financial support.

“Financial support is not one-size-fits-all,” says Kirstin Maanum, director of the CSAR. “We’re determined to help students work toward a plan that works for their unique situation.”

In addition to learning about grant and scholarship opportunities, financial literacy is essential for students’ success both during and after college. The Financial Wellness Center, FWC, is dedicated to helping them understand and manage their personal finances. The center provides one-on-one guidance to help students create budgets, evaluate financial options, and build habits that lead to long-term financial stability.

Additionally, from Feb. 4 through April 12, the FWC will host Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, VITA, clinics, offering free tax preparation assistance, including personalized appointments and IRS self-filing guidance. The VITA clinics are available to both U.S. residents and international students. Click here to make an appointment.

“Our goal is to empower students with financial knowledge,” says Gabrielle McAllaster, director of the FWC. “That allows them to make informed financial decisions, now and throughout their livelihoods.”

Understanding and managing finances can help students not only stay in school but also thrive beyond graduation. With resources like the Center for Student Access and Resources and the Financial Wellness Center, Student Affairs is here to support students learn about financial resources.
