Campus-area construction projects on schedule for the first day of school

After a long, hot summer of detours and major construction projects around campus, completion has arrived just in time for the fall semester to begin.

In May, work started on a long-awaited project to upgrade the roadway and sidewalks between University Street and North Campus Drive along 100 South. Salt Lake City crews replaced the deteriorating pavement so that bicyclists and pedestrians will have safer multi-modal access by widening the southern sidewalk and adding a new sidewalk where none previously existed. Another change that frequent travelers will see is that on-street parking was permanently removed to make room for the new features.

“One thing I want to make abundantly clear for drivers is the on-street parking that was once on 100 South is no longer there,” said Kyle Parkin, associate director at University of Utah Commuter Services. “The 100 South project has been on track throughout the summer, and that one is going to be opened by the first day of school for sure.”

Parkin noted that while the major portions of the project will be finished in August, a few smaller upgrades, such as adding another pedestrian crosswalk, should be done in October.

The Utah Transit Authority (UTA) also began an extended maintenance and repair project on TRAX Red Line in May. The agency still plans on having the Red Line back on track for normal commuter service beginning Monday, Aug. 18.
