The University of Utah released two major safety reports this week—an accounting of overall campus crime and fire statistics, the Annual Security Report (ASR) required by federal law and a housing-specific analysis dictated by state law.
Under the Clery Act, U.S. higher education institutions are required to gather information about all crimes committed within the main campus boundary, in nearby neighborhoods and on satellite campuses. Incidents reported at University of Utah Health Hospitals & Clinics are also included in the final report.
This year, the 2025 crime reports note:
- Motor vehicle thefts (which include 53 e-scooters, e-bikes and e-skateboards thefts) have increased from 35 in 2024 to 62 in 2025.
- Alcohol offenses have increased from 184 in 2024 to 316 last year, marking a return to pre-COVID levels.

Of note, hazing statistics reported in the ASR and those included in the Campus Hazing Transparency Report (CHTR) serve different purposes and are based on different reporting standards. The ASR reflects reports received, while the CHTR reflects cases in which responsibility has been established through an investigation and adjudication process.
Additionally, statistics reported in the 2025 crime columns of the full report reflect the total number of incidents that occurred across both the main academic campus and the medical campus. Previous reports have included health campus statistics highlighted in red.

About the Clery Act
Colleges and universities in the United States are required to publish this annual security report under the Clery Act. Named after Jeanne Clery, a student who was tragically murdered on her college campus in 1986, the report provides detailed statistics on campus crime, including incidents of sexual assault, burglary, hate crimes and other safety-related issues. It also outlines the campus’ safety policies, prevention programs and procedures for reporting crimes. The purpose of the Clery Report is to promote transparency and ensure that students, parents and the public have access to accurate information about campus safety, thereby fostering a safer educational environment.
