Humans of the U: Nadia Faleh

“West High has the first-ever, on-campus pediatric clinic that students can come in or go to see providers, and any Salt Lake City District students can go.

A lot of the students that West High has are from underserved communities; so, it’s been really nice to have that clinic on campus because a lot of them come from a one-parent household.

I went to an elementary school that was underserved, in a low-income community, and I didn’t have anything like that at the time.

It’s really taxing on the parents and the students, and I think it’s made a difference with the students on campus, because if they’re struggling, they don’t have to just continue struggling. They can go see a health care provider on campus since they’re on campus five days out of the week

Right now, my work really consists of just getting the word out there for parents and students that the clinic is here. I’ve been trying to make the posts that I put on social media really fun and catchy for the younger generation, and then quick and easy to read for parents on Facebook.

I got my internship through Goff Explorers. I’m not a business student, but when you think about Goff and internships, you think business. I come from a health care point of view. It goes really hand in hand with my pre-nursing major. I’m working on getting my medical assisting license right now, and the people who work at the clinic are M.A.s.

I was working with my coach, and she’s like, ‘Hey, if you’re really into looking for an internship, I would go to Goff.’ A couple of weeks after that conversation, my friends were applying for it, and I was like, maybe I want to try this out. Just anything really, to build that resume, right? So, I looked into it, I applied, ended up getting an interview and then I got in.

I think it’s awesome. I never really thought about doing an internship until that conversation with my coach. It’s been a great opportunity. It’s opened my eyes to more things that I could actually do than just getting my degree and just working with my degree. I never thought I could be a person to advocate for a clinic for these students, but here I am now, and it’s been great. So, I think it’s had a great impact, and I’m happy to be a part of it, even though it’s only for such a short amount of time.”
