U breaks ground on hospital and health campus in West Valley

The University of Utah’s first off-campus inpatient facility is coming to West Valley.

The historic project will expand access to world-class health care and create thousands of jobs in Utah’s westside communities.

“For 60 years, the Eccles family has partnered with University of Utah Health to support exceptional health care,” said Spencer F. Eccles, Chairman and CEO of the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation. “Today, we’re proud to continue this partnership on what is one of the most impactful projects our Foundation has ever supported. We couldn’t be more excited about the future—a future of better health and expanded opportunities for our westside communities.”

On Friday, June 13, leaders from Salt Lake County’s west side communities joined with community members, state leaders, officials from the U and U of U Health and the Eccles family for a ceremonial ground breaking in West Valley at Centennial Park—one block away from the future site of Eccles Health Campus located at 3750 South and 5600 West.

“Projects like these bring people together,” said Taylor Randall, U president. “They are projects that make us wrestle with the hard problems of society, but they give us momentum and hope that the future can be better than today.”

A landmark $75 million gift from the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation will enable construction of the 800,000 square-foot state-of-the-art health campus. The foundation’s largest gift to date, this donation represents the Eccles family’s commitment to investing in communities and improving the daily lives of Utahns.

Grounded in partnership between the University of Utah and community members of West Valley City, Utah’s second-largest city, the University of Utah Eccles Health Campus and Eccles Hospital in West Valley will feature approximately 130 patient beds and comprehensive outpatient clinics with 200 exam rooms for specialties including heart care, orthopedics, women’s health and pediatrics, in addition to general internal medicine, urgent care, and a helipad.

Construction will begin this summer with doors slated to open in 2028. Along with offering University of Utah Health’s nationally recognized patient care, the Eccles Health Campus will be a primary training site for Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine students. The Eccles Health Campus will also create over 2,000 new jobs, along with education pathways for westside community members that lead to careers within the facility.
