Updated: September 16, 2026—In recent days, a dispute between political groups on the University of Utah campus has resulted in allegations of harassment, threats, and the inappropriate sharing or amplification of personal information. The University of Utah is reviewing these accusations consistent with established policies, due process and applicable law.
As we conduct this review, the university will continue to simultaneously protect freedom of expression and the safety of our students. Calls to harm someone, including electronic harassment and inappropriate sharing of information, are not protected by free speech.
In addition, to foster greater dignity in the face of disagreement and as a learning moment for our students, University of Utah leaders will ask representatives of the Utah Republican Party and Utah Democratic Party to convene with student leaders in coming days to share perspectives, listen, learn, and where possible, find common ground. This type of dialogue exemplifies the proper role of a university as a place where dignified disagreement and diversity of thought not only exist, but thrive.
The University of Utah affirms in the strongest terms that violence or threats of violence are unacceptable. We also uphold our institutional core value of the inherent dignity of all people. When students engage in vigorous debate while recognizing the worth and esteem of others, we exemplify our mission to prepare students to be leaders and global citizens who strengthen our society and democracy.

September 14, 2026—The University of Utah is aware of social media activity involving members of our campus community that has generated significant online attention and concern, including reports of threats and harassment.
The university strongly supports freedom of expression, including speech that may be controversial, offensive or deeply upsetting. That freedom must coexist with our shared responsibility to protect the safety and well-being of others.
We encourage students to seek opportunities to extend understanding and move toward resolution. Disagreement should never become an invitation to target, intimidate or threaten another person.
The university is working with those directly affected and is reviewing the circumstances surrounding this matter consistent with university policy and applicable law. Because those processes involve individual students, we will not discuss specific student matters publicly.
We encourage students to express their views peacefully and respectfully, recognizing that disagreement is an important part of a university community. Even when those disagreements are profound, we can engage with one another in ways that respect the safety, dignity and well-being of others.
Anyone who receives a threat or has an immediate safety concern should contact University Police at 801-585-2677 or email at chief@dps.utah.edu. Students directly impacted are encouraged to reach out to Office of the Dean of Students by calling 801-581-7066, email at deanofstudents@utah.edu or by visiting their office in Olpin Student Union Building.
