The U celebrates Latine Heritage Month 2026

Beginning Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, the University of Utah will honor the cultural traditions of Utah’s Hispanic community as it observes Latine Heritage Month.

This year’s theme is “Unidos Somos Más” (“Together We Are More”), a keynote meant to resonate and connect with everyone, said LeiLoni Allan McLaughlin, director of the Center for Cultural and Community Engagement (CCE).

“We have some amazing events coming up. The first is a mentorship speed-networking event called Cafecito y Conexión,” she said. “This is a chance for students to meet with professionals in their field of study—people who’ve completed their degrees and are now working in that field—and get real advice on career paths, what university was like for them and potential internship opportunities.”

“When we invite community in and we bring a myriad of people, staff, faculty and community partners and legislators,” Allan McLaughlin said. “It really helps support our students overall to see that their academic experience can lead to high outcomes and that education is definitely worth it, and something they should invest in.”

Among the events scheduled is a mentorship speed-networking event called Cafecito y Conexión on Sept. 15 on the seventh floor of Child Hall in the David Eccles School of Business. Students have the opportunity to meet with professionals in their field of study—individuals who have completed their degrees and are currently working in that field—and receive real advice on career paths, what university was like for them and potential internship opportunities.

“Among our amazing mentors is Utah state Sen. Luz Escamilla, joining us from the world of politics and government,” said Allan McLaughlin. Interested students are encouraged to sign up to meet with the senator one-on-one and talk about mentorship. Other potential mentors will range from University of Utah alumni, current students, as well as community partners, she added.

Following the mentorship event, there is a resource fair that will begin at 3 p.m. Along with the events during Latine Heritage Month, the Marriott Library will host an exhibit from Sept. 15–Dec. 15. On display will be a presentation called La China Problana, “femininity across the border,” highlighting different textiles in clothing.

The exhibit and all events are free and open to the U community.
