[bs_col class=”col-sm-8″]Recent poor air quality has focused attention on non-occupational respiratory protection usage.  While certain types of respiratory protection can be effective in protecting individuals against the negative effects of poor air quality, there are a few factors to consider prior to using or purchasing.

  1. Respiratory protection can place an additional burden on the respiratory system, the use of any respiratory protection device should be discussed with your physician prior to use.
  2. The correct type of respiratory protection should be selected, for example, Utah’s poor air quality is primarily associated with particulate matter. In selecting respiratory protection, consult the manufacturer’s recommendations to determine whether the device/filter is effective for particulates.
  3. Proper fit is important to maintain effectiveness of the respiratory protection device. Ensure that you have a good seal against the skin.  Beards, mustaches, improper size and other factors can all impact fit.
  4. Maintenance and storage considerations can also impact the effectives of the respiratory protection device. Non-disposable devices should be cleaned after each use, and inspected prior to use.  They should be stored in bags away from dust, dirt and sunlight.  Disposable respiratory protection devices are considered to be single use only and should not be re-used.

There are a number of extended use respiratory protection devices on the market, please be advised of the following:

The filter material is identical to that used in disposable devices.  It is not intended for permanent use, and has a limited life span.

All manufacturer’s recommendations must be followed to ensure optimal effectiveness.

The desire to use respiratory protection to safeguard your health is understandable.  Keep in mind the limitations and considerations listed above when using respiratory protection devices. [/bs_col]
