Rise and dine: Eat breakfast all day across campus

Are you an early riser craving a cinnamon roll at sunrise or a night owl in need of eggs and bacon after class? The U has launched two new breakfast locations featuring all-day breakfast menus. At Gardner Commons and CRCC, Iron Waffle and Seagull Sunrise are redefining the most important meal of the day—serving up sweet, savory and comforting options long after the morning rush. From waffle-based combinations to mega bowls of cereal, now you can enjoy breakfast whenever your hunger demands it.

Iron Waffle

Open from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. weekdays, Iron Waffle in Gardner Commons uses sweet and savory waffles to bring the campus community a hearty and satisfying start to the day.

Waffles, explains Campus Executive Chef Ken Ohlinger, are a perfect base for a wide variety of offerings that also provide students with a familiar, and even nostalgic, breakfast item.

Students who are away from home for the first time might find that breakfast foods like waffles with syrup remind them of their childhood and family routines—making the first meal of the day both emotionally satisfying and a filling and affordable start to the day.

At Iron Waffle, each waffle is customized to blend with the topping that will ultimately finish the dish. Chopped bacon and black pepper are added to the batter for the classic egg and bacon waffle. Fresh basil is sprinkled inside the bruschetta waffle batter before being topped with mozzarella cheese, chunky diced tomatoes and a balsamic drizzle.

“If it’s a s’mores waffle, we have a chocolate chip waffle and, in the pizza waffle, we have oregano,” said Ohlinger. “So, every waffle has this unique filling inside and then from there, toppings are added.”

Ohlinger explains that they will add new flavor options as the seasons change. “We’ll get into some fall or autumnal waffles and this winter, when everyone is getting ready for ski season, you can have a hearty waffle before you go up the mountain.”

Seagull Sunrise

On Thursday, Aug. 28, Seagull Sunrise celebrated its recent opening by handing out fresh-out-of-the-oven cinnamon rolls in front of CRCC.

Seagull Sunrise offers “made-to-order breakfast items such as a cinnamon roll topping bar similar to Cinnabon, as well as yogurt, breakfast burritos, cereal bowls, a waffle bar and everything you can think of in the way of breakfast,” said Kyle Suerth, resident district manager with Chartwells Higher Ed.

Personally customized breakfast dishes are all for the taking here—whether that’s French toast topped with fruity jams or a warm bagel spread with flavored cream cheese that you can grab and eat on the way to class.

Open from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., hot handhelds, huevos rancheros, shrimp and grits and other rotating offerings will also be on the menu.

Breakfast all day, your way

The U community has spoken and breakfast foods are in high demand thanks to tight schedules and budgets.
