Responding to students’ feedback from interactions with Mental Health First Responders (MH1) and the Center for Campus Wellness (CCW) Basic Needs Collective (BNC) case managers, a new collaboration between Housing & Dining Programs, the Office of Residence Life and the Center for Campus Wellness is assisting students with resources that include nonperishable and instant food items, a thrift store, personal hygiene items and wellness kits.
“We know there’s a real need among students for low-barrier, self-serve wellness resources,” said Char Leary, associate director of Advocacy Services for the Center for Campus Wellness. “The Wellness Exchange is an exciting step toward meeting that need, creating a space where students can take what they need and give what they can, all in a stigma-free environment.”
The funding for the Wellness Exchange project was secured through the University of Utah Parent Fund and donations. Staff from the Center for Campus Wellness will handle set-up and stocking. Routine maintenance of the space, along with advertising and pathways to access students provided by Housing & Dining Programs.
“We are committed to creating inviting environments that provide resources for residents and students in general,” said Anna Dickherber, executive director of Housing & Dining Programs. “PHC is the hub for more than 2,000 students on the upper campus, and we are glad to work with our partners to assist students holistically, providing those items students need to be successful.”
The pilot aims for continuity based on utilization by students. The team will gather data to assess the space and its impact until May 2026, when the collective will determine the continuation of the project.
“The Wellness Exchange at the Petersen Heritage Center models exactly how college town magic will be achieved: multiple offices coming together to leverage our various expertise to support the students living in our halls,” said Stephen Henninger, director of Residence Life. “I’m excited to see how this multi-office collaboration benefits our students and continues to expand in the years to come.”
Donations are welcome
The Wellness Exchange creates opportunities for campus partners and students to get involved through donation drives, pop-up thrift events, and volunteer efforts. Donations can be dropped off at the Wellness Exchange at the Peterson Heritage Center (PHC), in the clear plastic container right next to the door.
We ask for non-perishable, shelf-stable items (canned vegetables, canned fruit, pasta, pasta sauce, or canned protein like chicken and tuna). Grab-and-go items like granola bars, protein bars, fruit leather, and fruit cups are accepted.
Clothing
We accept everyday wear and professional clothing donations. We ask that the items still be in good condition (no tears and stains). Shoes and accessories are welcome. We do not accept undergarments unless they are new and in their original packaging.
