To reduce the risk of criminals using compromised student UMail accounts to send mass phishing attempts, the U’s Information Security Office (ISO) will limit undergraduate and graduate UMail accounts from sending more than 500 emails per 24-hour period starting on Tuesday, May 5, 2026.
Students who are also U employees are not affected by this limit.
After May 5, if a student UMail account attempts to send more than 500 emails in a 24-hour period, the ISO will immediately notify the student that the limit has been exceeded and that the account will be blocked from sending UMail messages for maximum of 24 hours. The student will receive instructions on how to have the block removed. The ISO will process these requests as quickly as possible.
Students may request an exception in advance by calling the UIT Help Desk at 801-581-4000 and requesting a Security Operations Center (SOC) exception request ticket. A rationale for the request is required. Students may ask the SOC to create or add a Microsoft 365 group to the exceptions list.
