LOOKING ABROAD

International Education Week celebrates the benefits of international education and exchange.

By Kathryn Timm, Learning Abroad coordinator

part-two-077Learning Abroad and International Student & Scholar Services will celebrate International Education week with multiple events, Nov. 16-18. An Initiative from the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education, the week seeks to recognize the benefits of international education and exchange. Campus partners include International Leadership Academy, ASUU and International & Area Studies.

These events offer an excellent opportunity for students to explore their identities as global citizens, to reach outside of their comfort zone and learn about other cultures and perspectives. The events planned for the week will allow students to learn more about what it is like to study in another country and get to know more about the diverse international students who study on this campus.

Guillermina Loyola-Palaez is a senior at the U with a dual major in International Studies and Urban Ecology. She recently shared her perspective on global citizenship, both as a Chilean-American and as a student who studied abroad in Argentina last semester.

“As both a Chilean and an American growing up in an increasingly interconnected climate, I learned to recognize myself as a global citizen. This has opened me up to different and new ways of learning and methods of approaching the challenges and opportunities of the global world. When I studied abroad in Argentina, I was constantly challenged to be more independent. Living within a different culture made me all the more aware of my own society’s influence on my personal values and perceptions.”
