Something exciting is happening at the U this fall. After three years of development, Human Resources is ready to launch UCareer, a campus-wide classification reindexing project that will bring clarity, transparency and market alignment to how staff positions are defined and compensated.
The scope of this project includes the main campus staff only. A similar project is underway for Hospitals & Clinics. Faculty members are not in the scope of the UCareer reindexing.
UCareer represents a new chapter for staff at the University of Utah. For the first time, we are introducing:
- Professional tracks with distinct grading structures
- A comprehensive job library and career progressions that show how positions fit together and where growth opportunities exist
- Modernized job codes and titles, replacing outdated structures with a framework that reflects today’s higher education and professional industry environment.
Phase I begins Sept. 9, 2025, and includes positions across operations, administration, engineering, research, marketing, IT and more. Employees in the first mass update will receive an email from HR with their new job code and grade.
Additional mass updates will take place in:
- October 2025
- February 2026
Department-level updates will also occur between these cycles. No action is required from employees—just keep an eye out for your email notification.
It’s important to note that UCareer is not tied to immediate pay changes. Instead, it sets the foundation for the future by aligning our compensation structures with the market, enabling more precise placements and opening the door for thoughtful adjustments over the next five years.
On Sept. 9, to support employees through this change, the website compensation.utah.edu will go live as a central hub for information on UCareer, such as:
- Job code tables and grades
- FAQs and timelines
- Ongoing video updates from HR
Have questions?
We want to hear them!
Send your questions to ucareerquestions@utah.edu. This inbox is a collector only (you won’t receive direct replies), but every submission helps us identify common themes. Questions will be answered through FAQs, webinars and regular HR video updates.
Finally, we want to thank our employees first for your patience and engagement, and also our UCareer liaisons, administrators and HR partners for their commitment to making this possible. With UCareer, the University of Utah is creating a clear, consistent and forward-looking career framework—one that supports our ambitious goals and opens the door to greater opportunities for every staff member.
