Hinckley Institute celebrates 60 years

For 60 years, the Hinckley Institute of Politics has connected University of Utah students with hands-on opportunities to learn about politics, leadership, and advocacy.

The institute was founded in 1965 through the vision and generosity of Robert H. Hinckley—an aviation pioneer, local politician, co-founder of ABC broadcasting, and an instrumental part of Presidents Truman’s and Roosevelt’s administrations. He returned to Utah determined to help inspire the next generation. One of the first of its kind in the nation, the mission of the non-partisan institute is to “engage students in the political process, provide meaningful internships, promote a better understanding and appreciation of politics, and train ethical and visionary students for public service.”

“We have come so far in terms of the number of students we serve and our impact on the community,” said Jason Perry, director of the institute. “But our mission and commitment to the original vision of the Hinckley Institute remain the same. It is that foundation that inspires and compels us to continue.”

Fourteen U students interned in the nation’s capital that first year. In the decades since, the internship program has grown to include opportunities from local government to international experiences. More than 10,000 students have interned through the institute. In 2023, the U held a grand opening for the Orrin G. Hatch Center in Washington, D.C. This renovated historic house allows 50 students to live and work in D.C. each semester.

“We used to place a handful of interns with state legislators each general session,” Perry said. “We now send 30 students to our state’s capitol and co-created a training course for all interns. Our local internship program boasts nearly 300 students who intern for local government offices, campaigns and nonprofits.”

In the past five years, the institute has hosted a vice presidential debate, developed a living-learning community on campus, created two new internship programs and established new scholarships.

The institute will hold celebrations to honor its 60 years of achievement in Salt Lake City and Washington, D.C., this month.
