TRAX, the Utah Transit Authority’s (UTA) light rail system, is an incredibly useful resource for the University of Utah and the broader Salt Lake City area. In addition to the multiple stops on campus, TRAX’s various lines provide access to downtown Salt Lake City and extend across the valley, making it an indispensable part of the city’s public transportation network.
Ride for free
Every UCard carrier, whether you’re a University of Utah student, staff or faculty member, automatically receives a free UTA pass. This pass allows you to ride every TRAX line, in addition to buses, the FrontRunner and Carpool. The program is primarily funded through the Commuter Services budget, as part of an ongoing partnership between the University of Utah and UTA. For more information on additional services offered by UTA, visit our UTA webpage.
If you’re traveling to campus, jump on the Red Line at any station between Daybreak and the U or transfer at a station between Fashion Place and the Courthouse to arrive at one of the four on-campus stops: Stadium Station, South Campus Station, Fort Douglas Station or Medical Center Station. You can also use the Red Line to transfer to the other rail or bus lines.
UTA also offers a free fare zone in downtown Salt Lake City. Passengers may ride for free when entering and exiting a fixed-route bus, paratransit vehicle or TRAX train within these boundaries. If your ride begins before entering the zone and/or exits after leaving the zone, you’ll need to provide proof of payment.
How to use TRAX
Once you’re ready to hop on TRAX, all you need to do is locate your nearest TRAX station using UTA’s website or mobile app. When you’re at the station, simply tap your UCard on the card reader. Don’t forget to tap off when you’re done riding!
For a comprehensive list of all TRAX stops, including route-by-route schedules and helpful maps, visit UTA’s Schedules and Maps page.
Future plans
Although UTA has many lines and bus stops available to our community, they aim to continue broadening its reach. A new Orange Line route has been developed as part of the TechLink study that will connect the Salt Lake International Airport to the University of Utah’s Research Park. The new line will make changes to the Red Line and is expected to be ready to serve our community by 2032 in advance of the 2034 Winter Olympics.
