The University of Utah Police Department has earned formal accreditation through the Utah Chiefs of Police Association (UCOPA), joining a select group of law enforcement agencies across the state.
For students, staff, faculty, patients and visitors, accreditation provides independent verification that the department meets established professional standards. It also reflects an ongoing commitment to accountability, transparency and delivering high-quality public safety services for the campus community.
UCOPA accreditation is a voluntary process that includes a comprehensive self-assessment and independent review of an agency’s policies, training and practices. As part of the evaluation, assessors conducted on-site interviews, observed operations and reviewed departmental documentation. More than 170 standards were evaluated, covering areas such as administration, personnel practices, investigations, detainee handling, evidence management and support services.
“Achieving UCOPA accreditation is the result of dedication, collaboration, and hard work across all of our divisions” said Keith Squires, Chief Safety Officer. “This accomplishment not only reflects the strength and professionalism of our department today, it shows our community that we will continue to hold ourselves to this high standard as we serve the University in the future.”
To maintain accreditation status, the Department of Public Safety must continue meeting UCOPA standards, submit annual reports and complete a re-accreditation assessment every five years.
