‘Come From Away’ at PTC examines community connection in the wake of tragedy

Pioneer Theatre Company at the University of Utah closes its season with the Utah premiere of “Come From Away,” running April 24-May 9, 2026, at Simmons Pioneer Memorial Theatre.

The Tony Award–winning musical by Irene Sankoff and David Hein is based on events following Sept. 11, 2001, when 38 commercial flights were diverted to Gander, Newfoundland, bringing nearly 7,000 passengers to a town of about 10,000. What followed was a coordinated local response as residents organized housing, food and support for stranded travelers.

Rather than focusing on the attacks, “Come From Away” centers on the days after, drawing from interviews to present a network of intersecting stories. Directed by Artistic Director Karen Azenberg, the production features performers with Broadway and national tour credits. A small cast takes on dozens of roles through tightly choreographed ensemble work. University of Utah students are also part of the production. Theatre student and intern Jordan Soper appears onstage as part of the ensemble, contributing to the show’s fast-moving, multi-role storytelling.

Running approximately 100 minutes without intermission, “Come From Away” moves quickly but leaves space for the details that make the story land—small gestures, moments of tension and unexpected humor. It’s a production that relies on the cast as much as the material, asking them to build a community in real time, in front of an audience.
