UPDATE: U of U Alert: Unverified report of a person with a gun

UPDATE

Today, Oct. 21, 2025, University of Utah Police confirmed there was no weapon and no threat to campus following an investigation of a report of an individual thought to be carrying a long gun in a backpack on campus around 100 South and University Street, as well as Kahlert Village.

Based upon an initial call from a concerned citizen, the Department of Public Safety conducted an extensive investigation and active observations of the area where the individual was last seen. Police then made contact with the person, and it was determined that the item reported as a long gun was in fact an umbrella in a backpack.

Due to the prevalence of social media postings about this potential incident and actions taken on campus, University Police responded quickly and were diligent in following up on all reports.

We thank those who contacted the police and all our campus community who took action to “See Something, Say Something.” We encourage everyone on campus to continue to report suspicious activity by calling 801-585-2677. In an emergency, please call 911.

Official communication will always come from the Department of Public Safety when it requires immediate action. Campus alerts are sent via text messages when timing is critical. Ensure you are signed up to actively receive campus alerts.

This morning, the University of Utah Police Department received a report of a person walking along University Street and 100 South with what they thought was a long gun in a backpack.

Police responded to the area. Officers have investigated, reviewed security camera footage and were unable to confirm the presence of a firearm. They were unable to locate the person.

Many students and parents have been alarmed by an unconfirmed report and a photoshopped image posted on social media channels. As a result, police responded to reports from students of a person with a gun on the roof of Kahlert Village. All reports have been unfounded.

At this time, University Police continue to monitor emergency dispatch calls and other security measures. If there is an active threat to campus, UUPD will issue an emergency alert.
