The University of Utah is home to College Town Magic™. The campus has been carefully designed and outfitted so that students can live, learn, play and work within a walkable community. By living in one of the many residence halls available, with a variety of lifestyle options, students can embrace everything the U has to offer.
New and easier process
Upper Division Fall 2027 housing reservations will open on Oct. 5. Housing & Dining Programs (HDP) have changed the housing process to launch the contract earlier, making it less complex and more personalized for those who want to find their perfect home.
Starting on Oct. 5, returning students can select their room and roommate, giving them more flexibility and confidence as they plan for the year ahead.
For incoming fall 2027 freshmen, the reservation period will open on Jan. 19. This process is for incoming first-year students who paid their enrollment deposit and are ready to secure their housing spot.
Living on campus
Living on campus is not only about being steps away from classes, dining, recreation, and campus resources; it is about becoming a part of a community and embracing all that College Town Magic™ has to offer.
The U has reinvented the way students live and learn. There are modern buildings featuring amenities like meditation and fitness rooms, climbing walls, and gaming areas. Food options are endless both inside the residence halls and in nearby buildings. There are even classrooms in some of the living communities.
“We’re transforming the University of Utah into a campus where students can find everything they need to live, learn and thrive,” said Sean Grube, associate vice president for Housing & Dining Programs. “It’s about creating a vibrant, connected community—with the spaces, services and experiences that support students academically, personally and socially while they build their future at the U.”
Data from the University Analytics and Institutional Reporting (UAIR) show that students who live on campus have an increased graduation likelihood of 20 percentage points. Retention numbers are also higher for students who make campus their home. In 2024, 87.6% of residents were retained, compared to 82.8% of students living off campus.
U residents have 24/7 support, including access to security and mental health resources. Additionally, students can choose to participate in the university’s Living Learning Communities (LLCs), which offer housing options centered around shared interests, identities, or academic goals. Residents in these communities have opportunities to live, learn, and build community with a consistent peer group while connecting with faculty and staff both inside and outside the classroom.
