Although the state and city have restricted personal fireworks this month, the University of Utah has been granted a fire prevention permit authorizing a professionally managed display during Monster Jam, July 2-4.
A required fire prevention permit for the privately organized event has been issued after managers met all applicable safety, permitting and operational requirements necessary to conduct a professionally managed fireworks display at the stadium. Such permits require licensed operators, comprehensive safety guidelines and on-site fire protection measures.
“We have worked closely with university and public safety officials to ensure that the event can be conducted safely and responsibly while meeting all applicable regulatory requirements,” auxiliary services leaders said.
The approval process includes:
Regulatory Compliance
- The university is operating under a valid fire prevention permit issued by the appropriate authority.
- The permit specifically authorizes the planned fireworks display despite the broader public fireworks restrictions currently in place.
- Public fireworks bans are generally intended to restrict unauthorized or consumer use of fireworks; permitted professional displays may be authorized when stringent safety requirements are met.
- University officials have worked closely with fire prevention and public safety agencies throughout the planning and approval process.
Safety Measures
- The display will be conducted by licensed and experienced pyrotechnic professionals.
- Fire prevention personnel have reviewed and approved the display plan, launch site, safety distances, and operational procedures.
- Appropriate fire suppression resources and emergency response personnel will be on site during the event.
- Weather conditions will be monitored continuously leading up to and throughout the event.
- Monster Jam’s pyrotechnics contractor and the university have contingency plans in place, including the ability to modify or cancel the display if conditions become unsafe.
Risk Management
- The approval process included evaluation of site conditions, fuel loads, safety perimeters, and emergency response capabilities.
- The stadium environment provides a highly controlled setting compared to general public fireworks use.
- The university has taken all reasonable precautions to minimize fire risk while providing a safe celebratory event for attendees.
Community Considerations
- The university recognizes and respects community concerns regarding current fire conditions.
- The decision to proceed was not made lightly and reflects coordination with public safety and fire prevention officials.
- The fireworks display is being conducted under a specific permit process designed to ensure public safety during periods of elevated fire danger.
- The university remains committed to acting responsibly and in compliance with all local, state, and fire prevention requirements.
