The University of Utah is expanding its AI toolkit with the rollout of Google Gemini and NotebookLM, providing faculty, staff, researchers and students with new generative AI capabilities.
These tools are being introduced in alignment with university privacy, security and compliance standards, and are intended to support teaching and learning, research and administrative work.

Google Gemini now available in Google Workspace
Google Gemini is an AI-powered assistant available to U users with active Google Workspace accounts and is already in use within University of Utah Health.
Gemini supports everyday workflows by helping users:
- Draft and refine emails and documents
- Summarize content and conversations
- Analyze data in spreadsheets
Key considerations
- U of U Health workforce members—and academic personnel involved in patient care—must use the HIPAA-secure Gemini environment (university login required).
- Gemini is approved for use with sensitive and restricted data.
NotebookLM introduced as a source-grounded research tool
NotebookLM is an AI tool designed to help users analyze and synthesize their own materials. Rather than drawing from the open web, it generates responses based solely on content explicitly provided by the user.
Key capabilities include:
- Source-based responses with inline citations
- Support for PDFs, Google Docs, slides and video transcripts
- Automatic summaries and topic identification
- Interactive Q&A across uploaded materials
- Tools for creating notes, briefing documents and audio summaries
Key considerations
- NotebookLM is not approved for use within U of U Health environments.
- NotebookLM is approved for use with public data only and should not be used with sensitive or restricted information.
Responsible use and ongoing updates
University leaders emphasize that while these tools offer meaningful opportunities for efficiency and insight, their value depends on thoughtful and responsible use. Community members are encouraged to review the university’s AI guidelines and apply appropriate judgment when working with AI-generated content.
