The University of Utah is pleased to announce that Trevor Long has been named interim chief information security officer (CISO) for the University of Utah and University of Utah Health, effective Wednesday, July 1, 2026. 

Long replaces CISO Jake Johansen, who will become the interim chief information officer (CIO) for the University of Utah and Utah System of Higher Education on July 1, after CIO Steve Hess retires. Long will report to U of U Health System Chief Digital Information Officer Donna Roach and U of U Interim CIO Jake Johansen. 

For the past 28 years, Long has served myriad IT and information security related roles at the institution, most recently as director for Governance, Risk & Compliance (GRC) in the U’s Information Security Office (ISO). His work entailed promoting, implementing, and supporting the university’s Information Security Policy 4-004, partnering with regulated research efforts across the university and health system, and actively working toward raising cybersecurity and risk awareness, among other things. 

As interim CISO, Long will ensure that information security policies, standards, procedures, and automated mechanisms are documented and followed; work with relevant government and regulatory agencies to interpret information security regulations; develop information security policies, procedures, and electronic safeguards that comply with government and industry regulations; and work with senior leadership to promote the information security policy. He will manage the ISO, including the hiring, evaluation, training, performance management, salary administration, mentorship, development, and retention of staff. 

Long will work closely with the university’s general counsel teams; academic, health, research, and administrative organizations; and system and network security, access control, physical security, application development, and application product procurement. He will also work with other Utah higher education institutions, and private and government agencies. 

Long has a Bachelor of Science in behavioral science and health and a Master of Science in information systems with a focus on networks and security, both from the University of Utah. He is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and a Certified Healthcare Information Security Leader (CHISL).
