At 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 16, 2026, the classification labels of new documents in the U’s instance of Google Workspace will be set to “sensitive” by default.
Starting on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, UIT will administratively change the classification labels of existing unlabeled Google files to “sensitive” and documents already shared externally to “sensitive-external” by default. It may take up to three weeks for all files to update.
Classification labels, metadata tags applied to files in Google Drive (Docs, Sheets, Slides, PDFs, and other supported file types), were announced in May. The labels help identify the sensitivity level of information and enable policy-based controls for data protection, governance, and visibility. Changing new and existing Google files to “sensitive” by default is phase two of the project.
