Stefan M. Pulst, MD, chair of the Department of Neurology at the University of Utah, has received the 2026 Dr. John W. Schut Research Achievement Award from the National Ataxia Foundation (NAF), the leading organization dedicated to advancing research and care for people with ataxia.
The prestigious award recognizes clinicians and scientists whose work has significantly advanced the understanding and treatment of cerebellar ataxia, a group of rare, progressive neurological disorders that affect coordination, speech, and motor function. It is presented annually at the NAF’s Annual Ataxia Conference and is named in honor of the foundation’s founder, Dr. John W. Schut.
Pulst was honored for his decades of contributions to the study of spinocerebellar ataxias, a group of inherited neurodegenerative diseases. Since the 1990s, his research has helped shape the field, including the discovery of the genes causing SCA2, SCA4, SCA10 and SCA13, key breakthroughs in understanding the genetic basis of these disorders.
In addition to foundational discoveries, Pulst’s work continues to drive therapeutic innovation. His research focuses on developing new treatments, including antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) therapies, targeting molecular pathways involved in degenerative ataxias as well as related conditions such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and Alzheimer’s disease.
Founded in 1957, the National Ataxia Foundation supports research, provides resources for patients and families, and fosters collaboration among scientists working to find effective treatments and, ultimately, a cure. The organization’s Research Achievement Award highlights individuals whose dedication and innovation have made a lasting impact on the field.
Pulst’s recognition underscores the University of Utah’s leadership in neurological research and its ongoing commitment to improving the lives of patients affected by complex neurodegenerative diseases
