Make waves while you work out: Campus Rec launches Aqua HIIT class

If HIIT sounds intense on land, imagine doing it in water. Aqua HIIT is now available through Campus Recreation Services—and it’s turning heads for its refreshing, joint-friendly approach to high-intensity interval training.

What is Aqua HIIT?

Aqua HIIT blends short bursts of cardiovascular effort with aquatic resistance in the Crimson Lagoon’s activity pool. Participants cycle between max‐effort intervals (think underwater sprints, water jumping jacks, fast kicks) and recovery periods. Because the water supports your body, it reduces joint stress while still delivering a rigorous, full-body workout.

When and where

Aqua HIIT takes place twice a month on Fridays in the activity pool at the Crimson Lagoon. The first class kicks off on Oct. 17.

You can access the class through the Campus Rec fitness class package or drop in for just $7 per session.

Why try it?

  • Low impact, high result: Water buoyancy protects knees, ankles and hips.
  • Whole-body engagement: Every motion works against water resistance, so you’re challenging both cardio and muscles.
  • Fun switch: It’s a novel way to break monotonous routines—and it’s refreshing, literally.
  • Adaptable: Whether you’re long used to land HIIT or newer to high intensity work, the water setting lets you scale.

Who can join and what to know

Aqua HIIT is open to university students or those with a Campus Rec membership, ages 18 to 100. Registration is required and opens 24 hours in advance. A waiver must be completed beforehand. Register here.

Because the class is strenuous and takes place in water, participants are encouraged to take a physical exam and carry individual health or accident insurance.

Class schedules may vary due to holidays, instructor availability or university breaks—check the Campus Rec site for up-to-date info.
