University of Utah Professional Education combines flexible coursework with hands-on training to prepare students for careers as medical and dental assistants. Developed in partnership with University of Utah Health and the University of Utah School of Dentistry, these programs help learners build career-ready skills through online coursework, in-person labs and real-world clinical experiences.
Designed for students balancing work, family and other commitments, both programs offer flexible pathways into health care without requiring learners to put their lives on hold. Students gain practical experience while learning directly from programs connected to the university’s health care ecosystem, helping bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional practice.
Clinical Medical Assistant Program
The Clinical Medical Assistant Program prepares students for careers in clinics, physician offices and other health care settings. The program combines flexible online learning with in-person training to help students develop essential clinical skills.
Program highlights:
- Self-paced online curriculum that fits around work and personal schedules.
- Monthly in-person skills labs to reinforce learning through practice.
- Hands-on training in EKGs, vital signs, blood draws and other clinical procedures.
- 160 hours of clinical training through an externship experience.
- Preparation for the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) credential, including an exam voucher.
- Opportunity to complete the program in as little as six to nine months, depending on individual pace.
Dental Assistant Training Program
The Dental Assistant Training Program combines online learning, hands-on workshops and clinical experiences to prepare students for careers in dental care in approximately four months.

- Completion timeline of approximately 14-16 weeks.

- 90-hour externship coordinated through the University of Utah School of Dentistry.

For many students, the externship experience is one of the most valuable parts of the program.
