See South Africa through the eyes of a colleague who knows it well

This trip is co-led by University of Utah professor Melissa Watt, whose ties to South Africa go back decades. She worked there with the United Nations, led HIV research with the University of Cape Town, and now brings U students there for immersive educational experiences. Traveling with Melissa means seeing the country beyond a typical tourist itinerary.

She’s joined by South African educator Duane Stacey, CEO of Expedition Edu, whose on-the-ground perspective rounds out the experience. Together, they offer both a U connection and a local’s view of the places you’ll visit.

More than a vacation, a chance to understand the place you’re visiting

The itinerary pairs South Africa’s most striking experiences—including Kruger safaris, Table Mountain, the penguins at Boulders Beach and the coast—with its history, communities, food and conservation work. Visit the sites that shaped South Africa’s history and hear stories that offer depth and meaning to the places you see. You’ll come home with more than photos. You’ll come home understanding more about where you’ve been.

One trip, many sides of South Africa

In 12 days, the group will take in Cape Town, the Cape Peninsula, the Bo-Kaap neighborhood, Robben Island, Hermanus and the coast, the Cape Winelands and four nights in Kruger National Park. It’s a mix of culture, history, food, coastline and wildlife that goes well beyond a standard safari trip.

The logistics are handled, so you can just be there

Accommodations, ground transportation, entrance fees, park fees, many meals and gratuities are all built into the program, with the group capped at 20 travelers. You get to spend your time off experiencing South Africa, not planning it.
